NewsApple Mac OS Tune-Up: Software Update Checklist
Apple routinely updates their OS, and this can require several separate installers to bring an installation up-to-date. Apple offers a their own Software Update solution to keep your Apple software up-to-date. However, as system administrators, technicians, and people called for fix Macs routinely have learned… downloading all these updates can be a hassle (especially on a slow or dial-up connection). Many users simply ignore updating, or have an irrational fear of updating. This can make the job of someone working on a computer difficult… especially without a way to easily keep a copy of all the updates.
This page allows users to keep and maintain a local copy of all available updates for the Mac OS, as well as Apple’s consumer software offerings. This can greatly speed the time it takes to keep a system off-site up-to-date. This page maintains vital releases, or releases which mark the end of support for a particular system (for example, all Mac OS X 10.1 systems can be updated to Mac OS X 10.2, so 10.1 is not tracked here).
Updates take into account that the latest Mac OS X update has been installed. In other words, run the Combo update listed under each Mac OS X version first, then begin deploying other updates. And, if possible, use Apple Software Update as a check list to make sure you really are up-to-date. This check list is meant as a guide to help you fill your flash drive… not as a complete replacement to Apple Software Update.
Note: This page is currently out-of-date. I will not have time for the next couple of months to update it comprehensively, so I suggest you use this as a preliminary list. Apple’s accelerated individual-patch schedule hasn’t helped matters… but I do hope to return the list to parity in mid-June.
