Engadget Jumps the Shark (Updated)

One of the many, many things I don’t like about Engadget, is when they chose to write something completely biased and opiniated, and just slip it into the middle of a sentence. Like, in this article: “Granted, we fully understand Creative’s right to disallow the distribution of untested, potentially harmful third-party drivers…” Stop. Where in [...]

Yeah, I Got a Slingbox

As many of you may know, I’ve been partial to Orb for years. My main reason is that a Slingbox should be wasteful in the era of Windows Media Center… there’s no reason for it when you can have a computer with a cheap TV tuner card handle the payload. Emphasis on should, however. The reason [...]

ADC Gives no iPhone SDK Love

If you were thinking of getting some nice code samples (say, Touch Fighter) in this month’s Apple Developer Connection mailings… sorry. The April disc has nothing, nada, zilch on iPhone.

Apple PluginManager Updated

If you use Apple’s Pro apps, it’s that time again… run Apple Software Update. PluginManager 1.7.3 is out, all Apple says is that it improves the reliability of Pro apps. And yes, I know my Tune-Up tracker for Mac updates is woefully out of date. Unfortunately, it won’t be updated this week… CTIA consumes all.

AirPort Disk & Time Machine Restoring… Fails

A quick follow-up to my last post… I figured it would be a good time to try out that Time Machine-via-AirPort Disk functionality we forced Apple to release. So, I booted up from my Leopard install disc, partitioned the drive, rebooted, and ran Restore System from Backup… Note: You have to reboot after formatting a [...]

Upgrading the 12-inch PowerBook G4

My 12-inch PowerBook G4 turned three years old today. Really, it did, constructed in the factory on March 25, 2005. So, I decided to give it a big birthday present… a 160 GB hard drive (nabbed at Best Buy on clearance for $25). So, Tonight I took apart my 12-inch PowerBook G4. This is regarded [...]

Wii House of The Dead – Ported by Sonic Team

Crazy, but it appears to be true. The Nintendo Wii version of House of The Dead 2 & 3 appears to have been ported by Sonic Team. Where’s Sonic? Bueller? Bueller? Anyways, the evidence that they did the port lies in all the online files residing on Sonic Team’s Japanese servers… Like, here. After the [...]

Safari is Marketing, not Malware

A long, long time ago, I was having lunch with some Apple folk and engineers. I noted Safari for Windows, which at the time was top, top secret… and folks started to turn their heads away from the table when they heard I knew about it. I also noted how I was 100% sure that [...]

Dell Inspiron 530 BIOS Updated

Dell has issued a critical BIOS update for the Dell Inspiron 530 series. BIOS Update 1.0.12 adds new Intel processor support as well as updated Intel microcode. But, much more importantly, it fixes a buggy memory map for systems with 4 GB of memory or more installed. Considering I have 4 GB of memory in [...]

AirPort Extreme, Time Machine Finally Play Nice

Go grab AirPort & Time Machine Updates 1.0. It does what I’ve been railing Apple to fix (as well as many others)… and they have. Time Machine backups now succeed on AirPort Disk drives, connected to an AirPort Extreme base station. Enjoy, consumer advocacy in action. Update: There is also a corresponding firmware update for [...]
