Interesting theory. The problem (for Apple) is that with pro machines they do not know what the graphic capabilities of any given Mac Pro are. My graphics card, for example, was upgraded twice. It’s a long way away from the stock card that the MP came with.

Obviously I can’t comment on certain aspects of this, at this point. But, I will say that if Apple wanted to verify what graphics card your Mac Pro has, they could easily do so as part of the install process.

If System Profiler can tell what graphics card you have, any app could, including the OS X Installer.

If that is what is holding up Mountain Lion on older Mac Pros from official support, it would be more a matter of marketing, and keeping back from having a length set of system requirements. That would be a shame for Mac Pro owners, but avoid confusing the 90+% of customers that haven’t ever even been in the market for a Mac Pro.

In any case, my hope is for a middle ground, that OS X is unsupported, but tested to run flawlessly on those machines… worst case at that point, would be having to use Target Disk Mode or some other method to transact the installation.

I am sure you have considered Chameleon to emulate EFI64. See:http://www.jabbawok.net/?p=47
