Price Protectr Updates, Adds Lots of Options

Price Protectr, a site that I’ve blogged about in the past, has gotten another major upgrade.

First, they’ve added watching and targeting. This is a little confusing, because they both serve a function similar to the standard price protection feature. But, they’re more aimed at helping you buy better.

Watching is simply that, whenever a price changes, you’re alerted. You provide the store URL same as before, but now you can select a target date to stop watching. Whenever the price fluctuates, you get an email. There is one great thing about this, you can now define a longer/shorter price protection period. Say you’re a Best Buy Premier Silver member. Well, you have 45 days of price matching, so you can now tell Price Protectr to alert you for the full 45 days. And, if your item only has a 14 day return period, you can now do the same thing.

Targeting is a bit more clear. You enter the store URL, you enter a target price. When the item hits that price, you get an email. This is good if you think an item will go down in price, but don’t want to be bothered with small price changes.

Finally, they offer the ability to upload your receipt, and have it stored on their server. While this is a nice idea, I have two reservations. One, there’s no export option. I’d hate to rely on Price Protectr and have them vanish a year or two down the road. I’m sure the first response to this will be that they aren’t going anywhere… but that’s not a sure thing. An export option allows me to backup every once in awhile.

The other problem is, when an item falls off of protection, is the receipt still stored? That would be good for warranty purposes, but the feature isn’t quite fully documented yet. A help page explaining it would be of assistance there.
