No, there are no commitments or termination fees with AT&T U-Verse for consumers.

I am going to try and do the same thing. I am going back to Direct TV but want to keep my UVerse Internet. Do you know if the DTV installer will have to disconnect everything or can the internet connection be left alone? I really don”t want to call ATT and have them come out to re-install the internet connection. I have had a very difficult time dealing with them over the months.

Hard to say. If the installer used coax to get U-Verse into your house, there could be interference between the U-Verse signal, and the DirecTV signal. This is similar to how Comcast and AT&T have had interference issues when U-Verse is deployed alongside Comcast.

My advice would be to have AT&T come out and re-route the connection through an ADSL link instead of coax. That way you’re using the phone line for U-Verse internet, and coax line for DirecTV. Then there can’t be any potential for interference.

My past phone number was ***-***-**** at *** Walnut Lane, Justice Illinois,*****. On June 5th, 2009, I called and cancled services for my telephone, internet, and u-verse services. It was agreed upon that all these services would be disconnected on June 8th of 2009, the following Monday. I know that I had a balance of $155.00 but I got a bill saying that I owe $261. and if not paid by 07/03/09, you guys are going to disconnect the services. The services should have been disconnected on the date that was given above theirfore, my bill should not be close to the amount that you are asking me to pay. Please go back and check your records and you will find the mistakes that you guys made by sending this bill for that amount.

You can get the Internet Only portion if you do not Qualify for DSL!

Please don’t waste YOUR time (could be a whole day) to go through the install if you are just going to cancel. Tell the installer what you are planning to do, and let them just ETHERNET the TV STB into the RG and not even bother with the full install. Although, you will find a much better VALUE in the UVERSE IPTV than the other providers.

If you are a true tech junkie, I don’t see how you could live without all the features.

Mark, it’s pretty simple. I have my TiVo and my U-Verse STB, and compared the pictures side-by-side. Comcast isn’t downsampling HD half as much as U-Verse is.

Not to mention that my TiVo smokes U-Verse on features today. AT&T really needs to pressure Microsoft to open up more of the Mediaroom spec. TiVoToGo, Media Center integration, etc… all possible with cable, not possible with U-Verse/Mediaroom.

I would wait for your cable service to start working, as you can cancel U-Verse at any time. U-Verse does not prorate, so at the worst you would get a pro-rated refund for any unused service.

Just call 800-ATT-2020 when your new service is up and running on cable.

I was told by AT&T I can’t get DSL in my area. So if I get U-Verse, as a U400 bundle, TV cable, Phone & Internet, is there a cap? Can I get internet separately? (by cancelling or otherwise) I’m just not sure what to do. I am not happy with Comcast’s cap of 250 GB, but U-Verse might be even less. And actually, they are more expensive.

Hi carol. If DSL is not available in your area, then you can get Internet as Stand alone product with Pro or Elite Package. Though when u speak to Customer service rep’s some may still say that u cant, try speaking to a supervisor. I would suggest you to go with U-verse compared to Comcast ( something’s better than nothng)

I’ve had U-verse TV and Internet since it became available in St. Louis in late 2007. With so much online content and a much better HD picture via antenna, I’m thinking of dropping the TV service.
Here’s my question: How much will stand alone Internet 18 Mb or 24 Mb cost without the bundle? I pay about $106/month including taxes, etc. for U-200 with receivers and Internet at 6 Mb. If 18 Mb comes out to be close to $100 alone then it’s not worth dropping TV.

Hi eric. Well If u wud opt for internet stand alone . The approx bill would not exceed $67 – $75. However, at ST.Louis i dont think internet can be provided as stand alone as its not so profit to the company.

Chris or anyone else know if I can cancel my U-Verse TV and keep my 18 mbps Internet in LaGrange, Georgia? My TV worked fine since getting it in December of 2009, until about 2 weeks ago. Now it freezes and “pixelates” constantly. I’ve had numerous tech calls and still no relief — it’s been out about 10 days in a row and most days we can’t even get service out. Yesterday we had an 8-12 appointment and they couldn’t make it until today — apparently they can’t get their act together in our area to have fewer problems and/or more technicians. The only reason I haven’t canceled service already is I like their Internet service, but if they won’t unbundle them like the first post suggests, I will have no choice but to cancel everything and go back to (ugh) satellite Internet. I’d also be curious how much the unbundled 18 mbps would cost (I would drop the phone as well — we never use it and accepted it only because the discount was worth more than the monthly service). Thanks in advance!

UPDATE: I called AT&T today and asked the question I asked above. This is regarding the St. Louis market. I was told yes, I could drop U-verse TV and just keep U-verse Internet. I asked about the speed requirements and there are none. You can do 3 Mb alone if you want. That is refreshing to hear. AT&T is being consumer friendly! I would take 18 Mb (24 Mb is available to my house, but overkill for my needs) and use OTA service with a good antenna. The 18 Mb Internet is $55/month and 24 Mb is $65. I have U-200 TV with DVR now with 6 Mb at $106/month with taxes. Although I have a Media Center (HP MediaSmart) extender and software called PlayOn from themediamall.com that let’s me stream Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and more, I am looking at the new TiVo Premiere since it helps aggregate online media content easier. For ESPN3.com (replaces ESPN360.com), I will run HDMI cable from my PC to my HDTV in the main TV room. If your a sports fan you need to check out the new ESPN3.com. It has live ESPN TV programming online. Now you can have a la carte programming on your own terms!

8/6/2010 – Just got off the phone with an AT&T rep. In fact talked to a different one 2 months ago, and received the same information.

I can get just U verse internet without TV or Phone. The top end was $65/month + tax, the Elite $40/month + tax and the Pro $35/month + tax. If self instalation is available, then there is no install fee and a one time activation fee of $29. If self-install is not available, there is a $149 instalation charge plus the $29 activation fee. It includes a wireless modem and gateway with adds a $3/month reantal fee to your bill.

I am wondering if anybody has tried to have Uverse without the internet service? I have been trying to have ATT disconnect the internet portion for over a month and it is still broadcasting even though I am not paying for it (annoying when you have 2 wireless networks).
Technical support always says “oh it will be turned off in x hours” – but it isn’t. Maybe it is impossible for them to do?

I am not sure why it would be annoying to have two wireless networks, you could simply have your computer connect to your preferred network automatically.

But, if you want to turn off the ATT wireless network, connect to that network first. then type in the address: http://gateway.2wire.net then click the wireless icon. Switch the “wireless interface” option to “disabled” and click save at the bottom of the page. I believe that should kill the wireless signal coming from your ATT router.

There’s no ETF typically on U-Verse TV, Internet or Voice. However, if you bundle, you will be subject to the ETF if you cancel the wireless/cellular portions.

Unlike many cable operators, you can separate your bundle without incurring an ETF, and choose to keep only the services that have an ETF (such as AT&T wireless service).

U-Verse Internet is only a good buy when going above and beyond the 6 mbps tier. While there are some improvements in ADSL2+ over ADSL, they’re not significant at the sub-6mbps range.

The reason DSL is cheaper is that AT&T is running deep DSL rate-cutting tactics to compete with cable. Really, at this point, making DSL cheaper than cable is their best strategy.

I presume that U-Verse pricing will eventually fall in-line with DSL pricing.

As to comparisons with other providers, U-Verse is a good choice unless paired with HDTVs in a house, where at top speeds U-Verse internet will slow.

Also, keep in mind that AT&T has no bandwidth caps. Many cable operators now do. Having faster internet on cable won’t help you when you run out of bandwidth.

I am in the STL area and have 3 Mbps Internet and U200. I was looking for info on whether I can cancel my TV and upgrade my internet. I was looking at canceling uverse totally and going to ATT DSL 6 Mbps but looks like DSL can give me only 3 at my address due to CO distance. I also would have to buy a DSL modem if I went to DSL. If what is written above is true, I should be able to easily switch to just Internet, and keep the RG.

Cloud9ine, yes, you can do that. Simply contact U-Verse customer service.

Richard Milan, you need to get a return authorization number from AT&T. You will have to endure the hold to get that. From there you can take the equipment to any UPS Store… but you need a return authorization number, or they won’t be able to send off the equipment.

I just had the voice, internet and Tv U-verse bundle installed two days ago. I previously had Time Warner cable with two TiVos. I am *extemely* unhappy with the U-verse DVR. It lacks even basic TiVo-like functionality. (I expected different operation and perhaps a less user-friendly interface, but I expected the basic functionality to exist.) I am also extremely unhappy with myself for not researching better before canceling my other service.

At this point I am going to get TiVo back no matter the cost.

    – Current TiVo compatibility pages says it has no boxes compatble with U-verse
    – DirecTV has announced a box “coming soon” (early 2011)
    – Time Warner can supposedly use TiVo with cable cards or tuning adapters (which?), but the web is full of nightmares with that.

I understand from this blog that I can cancel U-Verse TV and keep the rest, but then I need a new TV service.

If I cut off the U-verse TV service, how will I get TV in my home when they are using my home’s cabling?

At this point I am planning to:

    1. Cut off U-verse TV and keep the rest, and go to Time Warner for TV *if* it will all work together. Any ideas if they will work together? Again, my U-verse comes in through coax.

    2. Drop U-verse altogether and go to Time Warner for everything, assuming I can get the TiVo box set-up correctly (meaning using the TiVo tuner and not the kluged tivo-controls-the-cable-box-via-optical-adpator approach I was using before).

Aargh. I am stunned at how poor the U-verse DVR is, including interface and capabilities. (Not that is any worse than the cable company DVR, I just thought after all these years DVR’s would be closer to TiVo.)

Ok- yes there is a cancelation fee IF you have a one year contract.
There is not a need for TWO DVRs because the one TOTAL HOME DVR records up to 4 channels at the same time and can be used by every tv that you have connected. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE A CONTRACT, it is only offered to you to lock in a good price with a better promotion. That’s up to you.

I just don’t see the appeal of U-Verse. For one thing, with all your services coming through the same ‘line’ anytime you have an outage, you’re out everything. And being an employee of DISH Network maybe I’m just spoiled, but I have a larger selection of HD channels and with great offers like HD free for life I’m paying less while getting more.

We had been with Directv since 2003, I made the horrible mistake of trying out At&t’s U-verse bundle of phone/internet/tv when we moved and I was told I could not get my simple DSL internet service at the new location, which makes no sense to me at all.
The install was about 3+ hours long, but otherwise painless. The installer himself had Directv since U-verse isn’t available in his area yet, that should have been my first clue.

We’ve had lots of pixelations and sound interference/loss on clear, sunny days, no idea why this keeps happening.
The box will be on, but it will be unresponsive to the remote…we’ve discovered that if it does not tell us to hit the “OK” button when it first turns on, it won’t work properly, usually there will be no sound coming through when this happens.
The box will apparently just freeze and lose whatever it was doing, the screen goes to grey static and I usually have to unplug the box to get it to reset and work again.
The tv will say, lost info on a blue screen…and it’s another time to unplug and reset.
The DVR gets behind and freezes up buttons are pushed too quickly, it’s very, very slow to react and do anything. Many, many error messages when using the DVR.
The HD is non-existent. WHY are we paying extra for content that is NOT HD QUALITY????
We have Netflix and if I use the computer at the same time someone is watching a movie, one or both will freeze up until I shut one device off. Same happens if we attempt to use both computers at the same time, one is on ethernet connection with main hub and the other is on a wireless router in the other room.
Home phone caller ID doesn’t always work, it’s hit and miss. Sound quality seems ok, but I think the reception does get choppy now and then just like a cellphone does.
I can’t get a local channel called the CW becauseAt&t doesn’t have a contract with them yet…so I can’t watch “The Vampire Diaries” at all!
The bill is sky high, even with all the so-called bundle discounts we have, I can’t figure out the fees and charges, very confusing!
I called to complain about wanting to cancel and the rep gave us Starz, Showtime, TMC and Encore free for 6 months in order to change my mind. It did temporarily…but the tv is acting up more each day and I’m over it and I just want to go back to Directv….I was told that my bundle was under contract until March 2012 and there could be cancellation fees…does that sound right?
    I want the U-Verse tv gone! I

I have had ATT uverse bundle with TV and Internet for over a year. The TV is awful. They have had to come and replace four DVR units and every time they delete all of my settings. So, I have to go in and reset up all of my shows to record. They said that the units were refurbished and they couldn’t do anything about it. The TV froze all the time. Then it went to the three dots and never came back on. The tech came out and reset it and did not give me a new one because he said that the units were all refurbished and they all have problems. I have been very patient with it and now I am going to Direct TV. Installation on Monday. Tired of ATT uverse deleting all of my recordings with no warning. Turn on the TV and everything is gone. Had Dish for years but DirectTV has a good incentive right now. Will try that. Keeping the internet as it is the only service where I live.

I called and spent hours on the phone to lose my saved shows. Now, it happened again two weeks ago , so i went back to direct TV and now ATT is telling me i have an early termination fee.
